Sarja valmistui alkuaan Berliiniin Galerie Pleikun näyttelyyn (yhteisnäyttely Timo Sälekiven kanssa) vuonna 2014. Tein kyseiseen näyttelyyn ensin hyvin hienovaraisesti väritetyn kuvasarjan Missä tuuli lakkasi, ja sen perässä syntyi sarja Naisia puussa, jossa värit ovat voimakkaampia ja sävyjä enemmän, mutta joita ei kuitenkaan pysty millään muodoin värikkäiksi sanomaan. Tuntui, että näyttelykokonaisuus tarvitsi vielä muutaman väriläikän jonkinlaista visuaalista dynamiikkaa synnyttämään. Aihetta ei tarvinnut kauan hakea, sillä idea puussa istuvien naisten varjoista oli juolahtanut mieleeni jo aiemmin ja olin alkanut jo työstää varjokuvia. Niiden värit vain muuttuivat voimakkaammiksi ja kirkkaammiksi. Yksi varjo on edelleen betoniseinällä, mikä muistuttaa hyvin paljon ensimmäistä lähtökohtaa, mutta muut varjot löysivät punaiselle, siniselle ja keltaiselle seinälle.
Berliinin Galerie Pleikun näyttelyssä ripustin muut sarjan työt suhteellisen normaalisti, mutta keltainen Pian lähtevän linnun varjo sai toimia yksinään yllättävänä väriläikkänä omalla seinällään, nurkan takana, Sälekiven harmaan sävyissä maalatun näyttelyosuuden puolella. Sen jälkeen olenkin käyttänyt teoksia Missä tuuli lakkasi -näyttelykokonaisuudessa kuin aksenttimerkkeinä muille teoksille. Näyttelyripustuksissa olen rikkonut sarjan ja käsitellyt teoksia yksittäisinä teoksina. Olen ripustanut sarjan teokset hyvin korkealle (istuvathan naiset puussa – ja lentäähän lintukin korkealla!), ja sillä tavoin rikkonut harmaasävyisissä kuvissa kulkevan tarinan rakenteen hetkeksi – tai muuttanut sen rytmiikkaa. Tällainen ripustaminen on tuntunut omaan silmääni visuaalisesti miellyttävältä, mutta samalla olen kokenut pientä riemua siitä, että teossarja on mahdollistanut sen, että voin leikitellä näyttelyripustuksella poikkeuksellisin keinoin, mutta kuitenkin niin, että erilainen ripustus tukee sitä, mitä olen halunnut sanoa.

I originally created this series to Galerie Pleiku exhibition in Berlin (together with Timo Sälekivi) in 2014. There I first created the very subtle toned Where the Wind Stopped series, after which the series Women in Trees was born. The colours are stronger and there are plenty more hues in the latter series, but still you can’t really describe it as very colourful. I felt that still needed some colour spots for the exhibition to enchance the visual dynamics of the exhibition. I didn’t need to look for the idea too long, because I had already thought about the shadows of the women sitting in trees before, and I had already started working with the series. I just tuned up the colour volume and made them stronger and brighter. One shadow is still lingering at the concrete wall, but other shadows found their way into red, blue and yellow walls.
At the Galerie Pleiku exhibition in Berlin I placed the other three works of the series in quite normal exhibition way together, but the yellow A Shadow of the Bird Leaving Soon was placed alone in the wall, around the corner, as a colour surprise among Sälekivi’s greyscale paintings at his side of the exhibition room. Afterwards the artworks have toured in Where the Wind Stopped exhibition, in which I have used the artworks like accent marks or diacriticals for other artworks. At the exhibition I have ‘broke’ the series and handled the artworks as individual pieces. I often hang these works very high (the women sit up in the trees and the bird is flying way up high, after all!), and in that way I have ‘paused’ the story of the subtoned pictures for a while – or I have managed to control the rhythm of the exhibition. This kind of exhibition layout has been pleansant for my eyes, but also I have enjoyed that this series has given me a possibility to play with the exhibition layout with a bit unconventional way, but still in a way, that the basic idea of the exhibition remains – or enchances.
