Noin kymmenen vuotta sitten muutin mielikuvituksessani muutamaksi vuodeksi puutarhuriksi Kyyneltarhaan, jossa puissa kasvavat monenlaiset kyyneleet – surun tummat, vihan punertavat, ilon hehkuvat ja onnen sädehtivät – ja jonka varjoissa yhdeksän kyyneltäjää itkee kyynelsiemeniä. Puutarhurin työssäni dokumentoin puutarhan herkkää, mutta eriskummallista ekosysteemiä ja tallensin muotokuvat kyyneltäjistä. Tästä syntyi Kyyneltarha-näyttelysarja sekä työstäni ja kyynelten kulttuurihistoriasta kertova julkaisu Kyyneltarhurin päiväkirja (loppuunmyyty).
Viimeinen Kyyneltarha-näyttely oli vuonna 2019 ja sen loputtua luulin sulkeneeni Kyyneltarhan portit pysyvästi – mutta toisin kävi. Tämän vuoden alussa kaivoin esille useita keskeneräisiä kuvia, joita en aikanaan ollut osannut nähdä loppuun saakka, ja pian löysin itseni jälleen mielikuvituspuutarhastani tallentamassa sitä, mikä edellisen kerran jäi kesken. Kyyneltäjien lisäksi puutarhassa työskentelee koko joukko saattajia, toivottaria ja tuulettaria, merettäriä ja kyynelkedon hoitajia, joihin olen etsinyt kevään aikana yhteyttä heidän muotokuvansa tallentaakseni.

EN | About ten years ago I moved to the Garden of Tears for a few years time, in my imagination. In the garden all kinds of tears grow on trees – those dark of sadness, reddish of hatred, shiny joyful ones and glistening tears of happiness – and nine tear artisans are crying the seed of tear trees in the shadows of the garden. In my work as a gardener I documented the sensitive but very extraordinary ecosystem of the garden and made portraits of the tear artisans. This all was the base for the Garden of Tears exhibition series and a publication Kyynelpuutarhurin päiväkirja (The Diary of the Tear Gardener; not translated into English), in which I write about my work as well as about the cultural history of tears.
The last Garden of Tears exhibition was in 2018 and after it I thought I closed the gates of the garden forever – but it turned out differently. At the beginning of this year I seeked out several unfinished images, which I couldn’t see clear enough before, and soon I found myself again in my imaginary garden recording all things that were left unfinished the previous time. Besides the tear artisans there are working several other people in the garden: the guides, sea maidens, spirits of wind, spirits of hope and caretakers of the tear meadow. I’ve worked through spring to find a connection to them, to record their beings in portraits.
